Alfred Korzybski and The Significance of Timebinding.

Posted on May 6th, 2006 by Bill : practicioner & free Bill
There is a _word and an idea_, invented many years ago by a Polish count, which can be revolutionary and explosive for people who are interested in the human mind.

That word is "Timebinding".

If someone ever asks you what the meaning of human life is, you can tell them - "Timebinding. It's that simple.".

Try reading "Science and Sanity" by Alfred Korzybski. It's not easy to read. It's not easy to understand.  But, it was and is a revolution in the way we humans understand words and thoughts.

Think of it as a challange, like skydiving, or climbing a mountain.

Here's a link to a blog entry of a Zaadz member writing about Korzybski:

And remember the word - "Timebinding".

This is more of a tease, and an appreciated plug for my post, but why not expand the blog a bit and actually explain and describe the concept of timebinding?

I'm hoping too, but I wanted to find out if there was interest.

Most of the people here are “spirituals”. Hell, I started out as a “spiritual”. And it can take a special act of 'stepping back' and thinking about the long term meaning and context of the “spiritual” impulse to understand how profoundly words, thoughts, and language shape the spiritual experience.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was _with_ God, and the Word _was_ God…”. How many times have we heard something like this?

The _Word_ is the basic unit of timebinding - the unique act, which only humans do, as far as we now know, on this planet.

By using _words_, humans have begun to master time. To step outside of time. To bend time. To tie time up into bundles for future use.

To _Timebind_.

It's the most amazing thing that humans do, and we do it effortlessly, and usually thoughtlessly.

But, when you start doing it _thoughtfully_, you can begin to timebind your own timebinding.

You start being a second stage human.

Oh wait, that's still more teasing, isn't it? ;-}

Good teaser, Bill!   I'm a Huge fan of Science and Sanity, it has influenced my life so much just from the first reading.  It's on the very short list of books that I will read every few years of my life.

Other than timebinding, the awareness of abstractions is my favorite part of the book.  I've been looking for schools that have programs teaching this similiarly to how he suggests in the book, but… I haven't found anything except some support back in the '70s.  Have you guys happened to hear anything?

Glad  there's more people bringing this stuff to everyone's attention!!  I agree that it's not the easiest book, but it's one packed with such important information. Glad you two are out there helpin'!

Just last night, in an audio teaching by Alan Watts he mentions time binding. Interesting.

I find this really interesting.
A few years ago I became very consciously focussed on semantics and science, and just recently I've arrived at a bundle of ideas, regarding human behavior, that can be recognized in some patterns…. and which resonates strongly with the term “timebinding.”

I'd like to read Korzybski's material; I've put it on my list.  :-)
